Grassland Middle students are the victors of the district’s first ever Virtual Battle of the Books competition.
This year’s contest, held May 13, took a different format as students used Zoom to answer questions about books on the Volunteer State Book Awards nominees list. Eight middle schools participated with eight students per team. School librarians and teachers acted as coaches for the teams.
The Grassland Middle team took first place with a perfect score. Brentwood and Woodland middle schools tied for second place, and Spring Station Middle took third. The other participating schools were Fairview, Mill Creek, Page and Sunset middle schools.
“During this time when so much has been canceled, we were thrilled to be able to figure out a way for the Battle of the Books to continue so that we could honor the hard work our students have done,” said Woodland Middle librarian Lindsey Kimery. “This was the first time the Battle was conducted virtually, and we are very pleased by how smoothly it went. We are impressed with the flexibility of the students and coaches to shift quickly and seamlessly into a virtual format.”
